Her visit to New York when she sketched the Aquarium took place in fall 1936, her first visit to the United States, and she would have made these prints soon after her return to Austria. Besides New York, she visited Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., Niagara Falls, Cleveland, Chicago, and Milwaukee. The print shown above to the left of "Chicago, Outer Drive Bridge" is of Georgetown (Washington, D.C. area). To my knowledge she did not visit San Francisco until after World War II. She left China in 1950 and traveled across the Pacific to San Francisco, then via Chicago and New York back to Europe. <br /><br />The two prints of the Vienna Opera date from 1920 and were reproduced a number of times, as was the woodcut of the Munich Circus Krone, in "The Studio" and in Herbert Furst's book "The Modern Woodcut."Andreasnoreply@blogger.com
